Swansea Floor Tiling Services
Porcelain Floor Tiling
Porcelain is the most durable option for floor tiling. It is dense, low-porosity, and handles heavy foot traffic without absorbing moisture or staining.
Large-format porcelain (600x600mm to 1200x600mm) suits open-plan ground floors, kitchen extensions, and modern bathrooms. Rectified porcelain allows near-invisible grout joints of 2–3mm. For properties with underfloor heating, thin-set porcelain transmits heat efficiently and maintains dimensional stability.
Ceramic Floor Tiling
Ceramic is a practical, cost-effective choice for lower-traffic areas and rooms that stay dry. It tiles well in kitchens, utility rooms, cloakrooms, and secondary bathrooms.
Ceramic is lighter than porcelain and slightly easier to cut around complex fixtures and fittings, which suits smaller rooms with many obstacles. We carry out ceramic kitchen floor tiling as a standalone service and as part of broader renovation projects.
LVT Floor Tiling
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) sits between hard tiling and traditional vinyl. It is warm underfoot, quieter than porcelain or stone, and compatible with most underfloor heating systems.
Installation involves preparing a flat, level substrate — any dips or high spots affect how LVT beds down and wears over time. We carry out full substrate prep as part of every LVT installation. Click-system and glue-down formats both available.
Underfloor Heating Compatibility
Many floor tiling jobs in Swansea now include underfloor heating. Tiling over UFH requires the correct flexible adhesive with adequate thermal expansion tolerance, and the right screed or backer board preparation.
We check substrate type, heating system specification, and tile format before work begins. Porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone all work well with underfloor heating when installed correctly.
Wet Room and Bathroom Floor Tiling
For bathrooms and wet rooms, we specify tiles with an R10 or R11 slip resistance rating. Anti-slip texture gives grip underfoot without significantly affecting the visual finish.
Wet room floors require correct drainage falls and tanking before tiling. We cover the full installation — from waterproofing to grouting. See our bathroom tiling in Swansea service for full details.

Floor Tiling in Swansea Homes
Swansea’s housing stock creates specific floor tiling conditions. Local knowledge matters — here is what we see most often.

1930s and 1950s Semis in Sketty and Killay
These properties often have suspended timber floors in original rooms and solid concrete in later additions. A suspended timber floor needs a cement board substrate to give a stable base.
Without it, heavy tiles above a certain format size are unsuitable. We assess this before quoting — skipping the structural check is how tiled floors crack within a year.
Victorian Terraces in Uplands and Brynmill
Victorian terraces frequently have original quarry tile or worn linoleum under carpet. When the carpet comes up, the condition of the sub-floor determines whether new tiles can go straight down or whether levelling compound is needed first.
Many Uplands and Brynmill homeowners want to restore the encaustic-look hallway floor. Geometric porcelain and modern cement encaustic tiles achieve this while meeting current performance standards. See our hallway tiling in Swansea page for more.
Open-Plan Extensions in Mumbles and Langland
Open-plan extensions are increasingly common in larger detached and semi-detached properties. They suit large-format porcelain that runs continuously from kitchen through dining to living area.
A consistent floor level is required across the whole span. We use self-levelling compound where the old floor and extension slab differ in height.
What to Expect During a Floor Tiling Job
1. Survey and Substrate Check
We assess the floor type, condition, and load capacity. Suspended timber floors are checked for flex — tile adhesive fails if the floor moves. Solid concrete floors are checked for moisture levels and levelness.
2. Preparation
Depending on the substrate, this may include laying cement board over timber, applying self-levelling compound to dips, or removing old adhesive. Proper preparation is the single most important factor in how long tiled floors last.
3. Setting Out
Before any tiles go down, we set out the layout: determining where cuts fall, how the pattern runs, and whether any focal point needs special consideration. Getting this right takes more time at the start and avoids the most visible tiling mistakes.
4. Tiling
Adhesive is applied to the substrate and back-buttered onto each tile. Large-format tiles always need full coverage underneath — any voids allow the tile to flex and crack over time.
5. Grouting and Finishing
Grout colour is agreed before work starts. Epoxy grout is available and recommended for wet areas and kitchen floors — it is non-porous and does not stain over time the way cement grout can.
6. Sealing
Natural stone and unglazed porcelain require sealing before first use. We seal as part of the job — no extra step or extra charge.
