Why Outdoor Tiling Specification Matters
Outdoor tiles operate in conditions that eliminate most standard internal tile products from consideration. A tile suitable for a kitchen floor is not suitable for an outdoor patio in Swansea.
Frost Resistance
Any tile used outdoors in Wales must be frost-rated. Standard porcelain and ceramic tiles absorb moisture — in a freeze-thaw cycle, the water in the tile expands and fractures the tile body.
The correct specification is a fully vitrified porcelain with a water absorption rate below 0.5%. Most 20mm outdoor porcelain tiles meet this standard. Standard indoor tiles often do not.
Slip Resistance
A wet patio or pathway in Swansea rainfall is a slip hazard. Outdoor tiles require an R11 slip resistance rating as a minimum — this is the rating used on professional outdoor surfaces in commercial environments.
Many attractive indoor tiles carry an R9 or R10 rating, which is insufficient outdoors when wet. We specify only R11-rated or better for all external tiling.
Tile Thickness
External tiles on a properly formed concrete or mortar bed need to be 20mm thick. This resists the mechanical loads from foot traffic, outdoor furniture, and the thermal movement of an outdoor surface.
Standard 10mm indoor tiles crack under these conditions. 20mm porcelain is the correct specification for patios, terraces, and pathways.
Adhesive and Jointing
Outdoor tiling requires an external-grade flexible adhesive and a flexible external jointing compound — not standard interior grout. The joints in outdoor tiling are wider than interior (typically 5mm minimum) to allow for the thermal movement of both tile and substrate.
We use the correct specification throughout — from adhesive selection to expansion joint placement.

Outdoor Tiling for Swansea’s Coastal Properties

Mumbles, Langland, and Caswell
Coastal properties in Mumbles, Langland, and Caswell face additional exposure conditions: persistent onshore wind, salt air, and rainfall that is both more frequent and more horizontally driven than inland. These conditions accelerate the failure of any outdoor surface that is not correctly specified.
Porcelain patio tiles are increasingly popular at these properties. A large-format 20mm porcelain tile in a light grey concrete or stone effect connects the indoor aesthetic to the garden terrace in a way that concrete paving and decking cannot match.
Specification for Coastal Sites
We specify fully vitrified frost-rated porcelain for all coastal outdoor tiling. Adhesive is an external-grade flexible product compatible with the thermal movement of the coastal climate. Perimeter and expansion joints are included to allow for seasonal movement.
Gower-Edge Gardens
Properties on the edge of the Gower Peninsula and in rural Swansea face wet winters, ground movement in clay soils, and significant temperature variation between seasons. External porcelain on a properly formed concrete bed copes well with these conditions.
Where a natural stone aesthetic is preferred, porcelain tiles in slate, sandstone, and limestone effects are available in 20mm outdoor format — the country-garden look without the porosity and maintenance requirements of natural stone.
Substrate Assessment
The bed must be adequate for the site conditions. We assess the existing surface before quoting and advise if additional preparation is required. We work with your groundworker or builder on bed preparation, or we can advise on the specification needed.
Outdoor Tiling Substrates and Preparation
The most common failure in outdoor tiling is inadequate substrate preparation. A patio tile installed on an unstable or poorly formed base will crack, rock, and allow water to pool beneath — leading to frost damage and adhesive failure within one or two winters.
Existing Concrete or Screed
An existing concrete slab can receive outdoor tiles directly if it is sound, flat, and free from structural movement or active settlement. We assess the concrete for cracks, hollows, and surface contamination before tiling.
A flat, sound slab is the ideal base — no additional bed required.
New Concrete Bed
Where there is no existing slab, or where the existing surface is unsuitable, a new concrete bed is required before tiling. We work with your groundworker or builder on bed preparation, or we can advise on the specification required.
Gravel and Existing Paving
Outdoor tiles cannot be laid on gravel or loose aggregate. An existing paved surface can sometimes receive tiles if it is stable and at a suitable level, but in most cases a concrete bed is the correct base for patio tiling.
Falls and Drainage
External tiled surfaces must fall away from the house to prevent water pooling against the building. A minimum fall of 1:80 (12.5mm per metre) is required.
We set the layout to achieve the correct fall and advise if the existing substrate level needs adjustment.
